Extra Lapis 9 (Garnet), Antiquarian
Antiquarian copy
From the apple of paradise derives its name: The red-coated seeds of "granatum malum," the pomegranate, indeed often resemble garnet in shape and color. And like seed kernels, garnet crystals are found in many rocks; garnet is "rock-forming," so like the pomegranate, it is a symbol of the earth itself.
The bright glowing red is the "original color" of garnet, even though it has long been known that garnets exist in practically every color imaginable - except pure blue. The richness of colors is matched by a variety of possible compositions: The word "garnet" therefore stands today for a whole group of minerals. It includes almandine, andradite, grossular, pyrope, spessartine, uwarowite and many others.
extraLapis No. 9 introduces the garnet group and explains the interrelationships: the structural plan of garnets, their composition and their miscibility, the formation histories and locales, the gemmologically important minerals, the colors and their causes, and much more. From the large number of garnet occurrences, two are described in more detail: the Zillertal (with almandine) and Bohemia (with pyrope). Their formation is exemplary for many garnet deposits of this world.
extraLapis No. 9 also reports about the great importance garnets have in our history: The first heyday of garnet jewelry takes us to the Middle Ages, the second to the 17th and 18th centuries. The classic red garnets are still popular today; nevertheless, all the others have also found their very special circle of lovers. Garnet, however, also plays an important role in ultra-modern technology: as probably the most important laser crystal.
