Kainite from Sondershausen, Thuringia, Germany – unique piece
This rarity from Sondershausen consists of several brownish-red to yellowish aggregates of the water-soluble salt mineral Kainite, stored in a screw-top jar. The brittle material displays a glassy to matte surface with a layered texture. Color variations within the jar create a striking and decorative appearance. The piece is ideal as a museum display or for collectors of historic potash mining specimens.
Geology & Origin:
Kainite is a typical salt mineral from evaporitic deposits and was one of the first economically important potassium minerals. The deposit in Sondershausen (Thuringia) is among Germany’s classic and early-developed potash mining sites. The Kainite extracted there originates from Tertiary salt formations and was historically used both as fertilizer and for the production of potassium compounds.
