Brightly fluorescent hyalite material from the Thomas Range in Utah, USA. The specimens show matte to slightly glassy surfaces with the typical irregular texture. Under shortwave UV light, they exhibit a strong green fluorescence – a characteristic feature of hyalite from this locality. Perfect for fluorescence collections, educational purposes, or as a decorative material with surprising UV-reactive properties.
Geology & Origin
Hyalite is an amorphous variety of opal (SiO₂·nH₂O), typically found as clear to milky-white coatings or nodules on volcanic rock. In the Thomas Range – a well-known volcanic complex in the U.S. state of Utah – hyalite forms through the precipitation of silica from hot aqueous fluids infiltrating fractures in rhyolitic rocks. The intense green fluorescence under UV light is caused by trace amounts of uranium, making this material highly sought after by UV mineral collectors worldwide.
