This selection features a characteristic combination of rare crystal species from Mount Malosa in Malawi. Typical are acicular to prismatic aegirine crystals on light feldspar or albite, accompanied by tabular zircon and reddish-brown monazite. The crystals show well-formed terminations and strong luster, often associated with contrasting mineral assemblages typical for this locality.
Mount Malosa is one of the most important sources of rare alkaline rock minerals in southern Africa. Its pegmatites and nepheline syenites yield a variety of remarkable mineral combinations – including the ones shown here.
