Fossilized (petrified) wood; sphere; polished; Sumatra, Indonesia; 1 piece
Fossilized wood sphere from Sumatra in Indonesia – 1 piece
This polished sphere was crafted from fossilized wood from Sumatra, Indonesia, highlighting the unique structures and color variations of the material. The polished surface brings out the organic grain patterns as well as the contrasting zones in black, beige, brown, and grey. Each sphere displays an individual pattern shaped by the natural fossilization process.
Geology & Origin
Fossilized wood forms through permineralization, a process in which organic plant structures are replaced by minerals while often preserving the original details of the wood. In Sumatra, such fossilized woods are common within Tertiary volcanic deposits. Silica-rich solutions replaced the plant tissue with quartz and chalcedony, creating durable stone fossils. The variety of colors is caused by trace elements such as iron, manganese, or carbon, which contribute to the distinctive patterns.
