Eucryptite, Apatite, Tremolite (UV!); Midnight Owl Mine, Arizona, USA – 1 kg
This 1 kg lot from the Midnight Owl Mine in Arizona, USA, contains a fascinating mix of rare pegmatite minerals with UV activity. The specimens consist of pale gray to white matrix, with light greenish zones and isolated darker inclusions. Main components are eucryptite, a rare lithium aluminum silicate, along with fine-grained apatite and scattered tremolite. Under shortwave UV light, the material reveals vivid orange to yellow fluorescence, sometimes accompanied by bluish or violet areas.
The fluorescent minerals appear as irregular patches, crusts, or finely disseminated zones. Eucryptite is particularly prominent under UV light and makes this material ideal for collectors of fluorescent minerals, schools, or educational display purposes.
Geology & Origin
The Midnight Owl Mine, located in central Arizona, is part of a lithium-rich pegmatite field. Originally known for minerals like beryl and phenakite, the mine also hosts lesser-known species such as eucryptite, tremolite, and manganoan apatite. Eucryptite forms during late pegmatitic stages and often appears as fine aggregates in quartz-rich zones, sometimes replacing spodumene or triplite.
Its distinctive fluorescence makes eucryptite a valuable addition to UV mineral collections. Tremolite in this material may also show white to violet UV response, depending on its chemistry and crystallization conditions.
