Obsidian "Apache Tears"; Arizona, USA – 1 kg
This 1 kg selection features numerous rounded, deep black obsidian nuggets from Arizona (USA), commonly known as “Apache Tears.” Their glossy, glass-like appearance and drop-shaped to oval forms are characteristic, having developed naturally through weathering processes from obsidian lava. The surface shows a mix of matte and shiny textures – when wet or polished, the luster becomes significantly more intense.
Ideal for mineral collections, decorative use, or lapidary applications such as tumbling, cutting, or polishing. Due to their typical shape and legend-inspired name, these obsidians are also popular among gemstone enthusiasts and in spiritual contexts.
Geology & Origin
“Apache Tears” are a natural variety of volcanic obsidian – an amorphous volcanic glass that forms when lava cools rapidly without time for crystal growth. The rounded nugget-like shapes develop over time through erosion, as sharp-edged obsidian fragments are smoothed by mechanical forces in sediments or ash deposits.
The name originates from a Native American legend: according to the story, these stones are said to have formed from the tears of grieving Apache women. The most notable deposits are found in the southwestern USA, particularly in Arizona and Nevada. This material comes from the classic localities near Superior, Arizona, renowned for their consistently shaped, high-quality obsidian.
