This unique specimen shows metallic gray-brown sections of algodonite in a contrasting white matrix. The copper arsenide appears compact and massive with a slightly lustrous surface, clearly standing out from the quartz-rich host. The distribution of the mineral gives the piece an interesting structure with a distinct separation between ore and matrix.
The specimen comes from Portage Lake in the Keweenaw District, Michigan, USA, a classic locality for copper minerals. Algodonite is a rare copper arsenide that crystallizes in the hexagonal system. It usually occurs in compact, massive aggregates and is closely associated with other copper arsenides such as domeykite and whitneyite. Due to its rarity and metallic appearance, algodonite is an attractive and sought-after collector’s mineral.
