Agate, Pseudomorph after Barite Rose from the D-Day Mine in Utah, USA; 10 kg

Reddish to dark red agate pseudomorphs after classic "barite roses" from the D-Day Mine in Utah. These specimens show well-preserved crystal forms of the original barite, which was replaced by agate in the oxidation zone of the deposit. Their flower-like shapes are iconic among collectors of mineral pseudomorphs – striking, educational, and geologically significant.

Such specimens are especially valued by collectors of rare pseudomorphs, but they also serve well in display collections, educational exhibits, or as reference material in geological teaching. The vivid red agate contrasts beautifully with the darker host matrix, making this lot visually appealing.

Geology & Origin

The D-Day Mine is located in San Juan County, Utah, within a geologically diverse region of the southwestern United States. These agate pseudomorphs formed through post-volcanic silica infiltration, which selectively replaced pre-existing sulfate minerals – in this case, barite. The transformation into chalcedony or agate occurred under stable conditions, preserving the crystal morphology of the original mineral in remarkable detail. Such replacements offer important insights into secondary mineral formation under silicate-rich groundwater regimes in the Colorado Plateau.
