Quartz xl, double-terminated; Stolberg, Harz Mountains, Germany; 1 vial
Individual quartz double-terminated crystals from Stolberg in the Harz Mountains – 1 vial
One vial contains numerous small, individually formed quartz double-terminated crystals from the Stolberg area in the Harz Mountains. Often referred to as “Stolberg Diamonds,” these crystals display typical hexagonal shapes with pyramidal terminations on both ends. Their color ranges from light gray to brownish-transparent, occasionally with a slight luster – a hallmark of this classic locality in the Permian rhyolite of the Harz.
The so-called Stolberg Diamonds formed through the slow cooling of silica-rich magmatic melts within porphyritic rhyolite, allowing the crystals to develop in cavities and fissures. These specimens represent natural crystal growth in volcanic rock from the Lower Rotliegend formation, which dates back over 250 million years.
