Shattuckite and Malachite from the Mesopotamia Mine, Khorixas, Namibia; over 7 kg; 1 flat as a unique lot
This particularly heavy unique flat contains numerous specimens with Shattuckite and Malachite from the Mesopotamia Mine near Khorixas in Namibia. The specimens display intense turquoise-blue to blue-green Shattuckite areas that contrast clearly with the brown to reddish-brown matrix and are locally accompanied by greenish Malachite. The lot ranges from smaller specimens to several large and massive pieces, showing different distributions of the copper-bearing mineralization. With a total weight of more than 7 kg, this is an unusually heavy and substantial flat.
Geology & Origin
The Mesopotamia Mine near Khorixas is situated in a mineralogically interesting region of Namibia where copper-bearing ore deposits have produced a variety of secondary copper minerals through weathering and oxidation processes. Shattuckite is a copper silicate that typically forms in the oxidized zones of copper deposits and is known for its characteristic blue to turquoise coloration. Malachite is a copper carbonate that likewise forms as a secondary mineral through the alteration of primary copper ores. The occurrence of both minerals on the brown to reddish matrix reflects the complex chemical processes within the oxidation zone and produces the distinctive color contrasts seen throughout these specimens.
