Top Azurite crystals in Selenite from the Serpieri Mine, Laurion, Greece – miniature specimen as unique piece

Intensely blue Azurite crystals are scattered in small clusters across a light, fibrous selenite matrix. The vivid blue of the copper carbonate contrasts sharply with the white to pale gray gypsum, creating a strong visual effect. The Azurite xls are small but well-formed, with a strong luster and partially hemispherical growth habit.

Geology & origin

The Serpieri Mine in Laurion is one of the most famous ancient mining regions in Europe. The area is well known for its secondary copper mineral assemblages, including Azurite, Malachite, and Brochantite, which formed in the oxidized zones of ancient lead ore veins. Selenite, a variety of gypsum, often appears as a companion mineral in these cavities and provides an ideal substrate for the crystallization of Azurite.
